Admissions Process

Before You Start

Thank you for your interest in the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) program or the Executive Masters of Digital Media program*.

We understand and appreciate the time involved in completing this application. While the application process is straightforward, there are several forms and documents that need to be completed and submitted before your application can be reviewed. Before you begin your application, carefully review the MDM/EMDM Admission Requirements.

Please be advised that while the MDM and EMDM degrees are awarded by all four academic partner institutions, the designated administrator of the program is Simon Fraser University (SFU) while a student completes his or her degree requirements. All students of the MDM or EMDM program are full-time registered students of SFU.

Application Process

To apply to the MDM or EMDM Program, you will need to complete the following steps:

STEP 1

Complete and submit the Simon Fraser Graduate Studies Online Application Form. This includes payment of a non-refundable application fee of $90 for Canadian transcript student applications or $125 for international transcript student applications (PLEASE NOTE: This portion of the MDM Program application is facilitated online by Simon Fraser University, Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies. All submitted applications are reviewed by the Graduate Program Committee composed of representatives from all four of the Centre for Digital Media's academic partners)

STEP 2

Mail the following documents to the mailing address listed below:
  1. Official Transcripts: Transcripts must be mailed to the mailing address below in sealed envelopes. Ensure you have submitted transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended.
  2. Three sealed Letters of Reference: At least two references should come from academic referees, but can include professional references. Ensure the referee directly addresses your suitability for graduate study in digital media. The MDM and EMDM programs do not have referee forms. Reference letters should not exceed 500 words, and must be on institutional letterhead and sealed with the referee’s signature across the envelope.
  3. A copy of official TOEFL or IELTS results or Pearson Test of English (PTE) results (if applicable): Please make arrangements to send your TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score. CDM does not have a TOEFL code.
  4. Proof of Name Change (if applicable): a photocopy of the proof is acceptable.

STEP 3

Complete and submit the following supplementary documents and forms through the MDM Online Application System (OAS)All of the following materials must be uploaded. The MDM Admissions office will not accept mailed, hard copy versions.

  1. Samples of Your Work (see submission guidelines): Upload up to five digital samples or works that best demonstrate your skills in digital media. You can draw from a wide range of items including exhibited art, designs, film or video, computer software code, engineering designs or some other product that resulted from your previous work. Please include a 250 - 500 word summary explaining how the items in the collection relate to each other and to your strengths. If an item is a collaborative effort, please clearly state your role in its production.
  2. Letter of Intent (no more than 750 words): (a) explaining your motivation for selecting this degree program (b) summarizing relevant skills, training and experience; (c) describing proposed interests within the program and (d) indicating how the course of study would contribute to your future intellectual or professional growth. All of the above points should be explicitly addressed in the letter of intent.
  3. Short Formal Essay (no more than 750 words): The topic of the essay must relate to digital media.
  4. Computer Skills and Literacy Summary Form
  5. Program Survey Form
  6. Resume (no more than 250 words): An overall summary of your professional achievements.

IMPORTANT: Documents submitted in languages other than English must be accompanied by a translation provided by a certified translator.
