The Digital Student

Things I did since last week’s post:

1.    Spent a few hours postering most of the University of British Columbia pink in Digital Bridge’s guerilla marketing campaign with my new fiancé.

2.    Oh yeah, I got engaged.

3.    Went to opening night of Code Live, got a free drink ticket at the entrance from VANOC volunteers. An hour later, I crept outside, came back in and got another free drink ticket. Then watched in amusement as Taylor and Al tried the same and got caught out. It’s all about the little things.

4.    Went to Ryan and Nick’s place in Burnaby to watch the Super Bowl and enjoy our newly brewed beer with a few classmates. Played around in their community pool and hot tub after.

5.    Experienced a brief communication mishap midweek when our client’s server was destroyed in a fire, halting all e-mail activity. Fortunately, it was replaced and back up in 48 hours.

6.    Saw coLab take a lot of heat in Classroom One during what was meant to be a routine Show and Tell between all industry project groups. It’s fair to say Tom Wujec’s group has polarized most of both cohorts, and some students who didn’t see their value were fairly vocal about it, with few defenders. What should have been a half-hour show-and-tell session between all groups turned into a three-hour therapy session for some. Oh well.

7.    Ran through three “Insanity” workout sessions with the usual set of students at noon. We’re now up to four times a week, but I took a day off.

8.    Decided I’m taking the Reading Week off and not writing a blog next week. Decided that one sentence before writing this one.

9.    Managed to get our Team CHLOE project back up and running as we got delivery of ramps and a base for our light-floor project. This means the 11 students in our group can now claim we have a student installation for CODE Live!

10.    Worked heavily on my online portfolio, which meant lots of 3 a.m. bedtimes. As everyone is, I’m hoping to get it all done and polished by our March 4 Portfolio Showcase, when dozens of companies and industry partners drop by the school to kick our tires and drive us around the block. Bonus – I come with fuzzy dice.

11.    Ran with the Olympic Torch Friday afternoon as it came by Great Northern Way en route to lighting the cauldron at BC Place. Most of the students, faculty and administration joined us in the light rain as we jogged alongside the flame, cheering and clapping along.

12.    Had a ridiculously fun opening night of the Winter Olympics with classmates as we took in the free events in Yaletown. The pedometer on my phone says we walked/ran for 11 kilometres – none more memorable than sprinting for five blocks trying to catch up to torchbearer Wayne Gretzky.

13.    Slept in Saturday morning, went to my local Chinese bakery for a breakfast of 90-cent pork buns. It was glorious.

14.    Had tons of fun with everyone who postered for Digital Bridge Saturday night, as we were all given free tickets to the Modern Deep Left Quartet, a DJ foursome from Victoria who performed in the hangar. Another brilliant night.

15.    Looked back on the most fun week I’ve had at school yet. Remembered I forgot to write a blog. Began writing this entry.

16.    That is all. Seeya after Reading Week!
