In Silico - September 9th 2008

The First Borns and NextGens at the MDM, September 2008The first week back to the Great Northern Way Campus (GNWC) for the fall semester of the Masters of Digital Media (MDM) got off on a quick start this past week.  The 'Firstborn' MDM cohort has been joined by the 'Next Gen' MDM cohort - which has caused no end of confusion: The 'Firstborns' can alternatively be known as the 'second years' (in reference to their status as seniors in the two-year MDM program) or as the 'first year students', since the 'Firstborns' are the first ever students of the MDM program.  The 'Next Gens' can similarly be known as the 'first years', by virtue of being in the first year of the program, or as the 'second year students' since they are the second students ever to attend the MDM program.

Hence the monikers: 'Firstborn' and 'Next Gen'...

So, to the 'Next Geners': Welcome!  We're happy to have you join us here at the GNWC.

On day two of the semester, some of the Firstborns were able to give short presentations to the new students about their summer internships - which for many of the students, had ended the week prior to the beginning of classes.  There were many unique internship experiences amongst the Firstborn cohort: Some students had a chance to work on the design for a high-profile art installation; others discovered what it is like to work and succeed in well known local game studios such as Relic, EA Black Box, and Threewave Software; a few spent their internships in exotic locales, like Spain and Singapore; and some were able to experience a corporate restructuring with impunity.  As many and varied experiences as there are Firstborn students - each with its own pros and cons, but all unquestionably valuable.

We're looking forward to an exciting semester at the MDM.  Stayed tuned for more updates!
